Artist's Description

The warthog gets down on its front wrists (placing its front feet backwards) while searching the dirt for roots and insects to eat. It stirs up the dirt with its snout and feet while it moves along in search of food. They are born with calloused pads on their wrists to protect them so they can move about in this way. During this trip to Africa, I saw a warthog with two babies who were being attacked by 2 black-backed jackals. The mother warthog defended her babies by charging the jackals while the babies sprinted to hide in a large nearby termite mound.
