Description
Their temperament and massive horns help to make the Cape Buffalo one of the top five dangerous animals in Africa. Although this buffalo was seen in a large herd, rogue bull buffaloes are particularly dangerous. They get ousted from the herd when they get older and are usually found alone or in small groups with other ousted bulls. Our land cruiser was charged by one a few days after this photo was taken. Our driver skillfully left the buffalo chasing after our dust! While on a walking safari during this trip, we spotted 3 rogue bull buffaloes. We were accompanied by 3 armed escorts who kept us out of harm's way by making sure our path back to the land cruiser was kept equidistant from the buffaloes. In another incident, I had to stay up one night in the dining area past midnight because a rogue buffalo had decided to settle down for the night near my tent. On that occasion, 4 armed escorts took me to my tent after it was determined the buffalo was unlikely to leave the area before morning. The reason why the buffalo like to get near the tents is because there are solar lights around the tent and the lions don't like to get too close to the lights. The buffalo feel safe from the lions when they sleep near the lights.
