Description
These Maasai youths are going through the Emuratta rite of passage, the most important rite of passage and one that every boy looks forward to. A few days before the operation, a boy must herd cattle for seven consecutive days. Before the operation, boys must stand outside in the cold weather and receive a cold shower to cleanse himself. The operation takes place on the eighth day and no pain relief drugs are used. The boys must not flinch during the procedure. It is painful yet means a lot to every Maasai.
