Hummingbirds belong to the Family Trochilidae. The most common hummingbird seen in this area is the Broad-tailed Hummingbird. Because of its red throat, it is often confused with the Ruby-Throated Hummingbird which is not seen in Colorado. The Rufous Hummingbird is an aggressive bird which often chases the Broad-tailed away from feeders. The Rufous is usually seen in the area in July and August as it is migrating through the Rockies to its winter home in Mexico. The Calliope Hummingbird is the smallest bird found in the United States. It has a white gorget with purple-red rays that may be erected to show a “whiskered” effect.
